What is Polyurethane?

Polyurethane, is a collective term for macromolecular compounds that contain repeating urethane groups in the main chain. As an emerging organic polymer material, polyurethane is known as the “fifth largest plastic”, and is widely used in many fields of the national economy because of its excellent performance. Its application fields include light industry, chemical industry, electronics, textile, medical treatment, construction, building materials, automobile, national defence, aerospace, aviation, etc.

The mechanical properties of polyurethane are highly adjustable. By controlling the ratio between crystalline hard segments and non-crystalline soft segments, polyurethane can obtain different mechanical properties. Therefore, its products have excellent properties such as abrasion resistance, temperature resistance, sealing, sound insulation, good processing performance and degradability.

What is the role of polyurethane?

Polyurethane can be used in the manufacture of plastics, rubber, fibres, rigid and flexible foams, adhesives and coatings, etc. It can be used in various fields of people’s lives and has a wide range of applications.

1, Polyurethane foam materials: divided into rigid polyurethane foam, semi-rigid polyurethane foam and flexible polyurethane foam materials. Rigid polyurethane foam is mainly used for building insulation materials, thermal insulation materials (pipeline facilities and other thermal insulation), household goods (beds, sofas and other cushions, refrigerators, air conditioners and other insulation and surfboards and other core materials), and means of transport (automobiles, aeroplane, railway vehicles, such as cushions, roofs and other materials).

2, Polyurethane elastomer: polyurethane elastomer has good tensile strength, tear strength, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, weather resistance, hydrolysis resistance, oil resistance and other advantages. Mainly used as coating materials (such as hoses, gaskets, belts, rollers, gears, pipe protection), insulators, shoe soles and solid tires.

3, Polyurethane waterproofing materials: polyurethane waterproofing materials are quite convenient to use, can be mixed at the scene, coated with room temperature curing, can be obtained with no seams, rubber elasticity and good performance of the waterproof layer. And easy to repair after damage. Generally used as paving materials, track and field track materials, racetracks, parks, ground materials, heat insulation window frames.

4, Polyurethane coatings: polyurethane coatings have a strong adhesion, the film has excellent abrasion resistance, water resistance, high and low temperature resistance and drug resistance. It is mainly used in furniture coating, building material coating, industrial plant coating and industrial printing ink.

5、Polyurethane adhesive: the ratio of isocyanate and polyol can be adjusted to achieve the adjustment of the performance of the curing material, so as to achieve a high degree of adhesion to the substrate, excellent water resistance, oil resistance and chemical resistance. Polyurethane adhesives are mainly used in packaging, construction, wood, automotive, footwear and other industries.

6, Biomedical materials: polyurethane has excellent biocompatibility, so it is gradually being widely used as biomedical materials. It can be used in the manufacture of artificial pacemakers, artificial blood vessels, artificial bones, artificial oesophagus, artificial kidneys, artificial dialysis membranes and so on.

Polyurethane product characteristics:

1, scratch resistance, no noise, long service life, reduce costs.

2、Temperature resistance at -40℃~120℃.

3、Polyurethane products are non-polluting, non-toxic and odourless.

4, Resistant to various organic and inorganic acids and alkalis, amines, salts and solvents.

5, Polyurethane materials have excellent abrasion resistance and flexibility.
